Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Occasional Phenergan After Taking Aldactone?
Hi I recently had a high ggt reading. It was 65 this week which was a repeat test it had been 55 the previous week. I am a 47yr female. I have been taking aldactone which I started recently for chronic acne (works well and I want to stay on it), I also have been taking panadol and ibuprofen daily following a recent knee reconstruction, a week prior had taken trimethoprim and ural for a uti, and have kept taking cranberry tablets to avoid that happening again, and the occasional phenergan to sleep. My dermatologist is concerned the addition of aldactone may possibly be a contributing factor. Would it be more likely to be one of the others? Should I eat more fruit and veg and maybe see a liver specialist? Thanks
GGT levels increase due to hepatitis, alcohol liver disease, cholestasis, pancreatitis, SLE or chronic coronary artery disease, using medications like Carbamazepine, Cimetidine, Furosemide, Heparin, Isotretinoin, Methotrexate, oral contraceptives, Phenobarbital, Phenytoin, Valproic acid and Promethazine.
Smoking can also cause elevation in GGT levels. Among the medications you have been taking, Phenergan and Trimethoprim can cause increase in GGT levels.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
