What Causes Occasional Swelling On The Soles Of The Feet?

I occasionally get swelling in the soles of my feet. Sometimes in the ball of one or both feet. Sometimes more generalized but always on the soles. I have had type II diabetes for 20 years; generally under control with medication. No nerve damage Blood pressure is normal. It doesn t follow the shoes I wear, or exercise, or anything else I keep track of. I have tried aspirin as a swelling reducer with no result. YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The swelling both feet with history of diabetes indicates micro vascular occlusion of peripheral vessels of the legs with underlying neuropathy, alteration in kidney function or side effect of certain anti-diabetic medications which are known to cause fluid retention in body causing edema of subcutaneous spaces. The following would help you for sure:
- Vigilant control of the diabetes
- Foot elevation during rest periods
- Avoid tight fitting shoes
- Aspirin is no longer recommended for this purpose and should not be entertained ahead
- Keep a watch on urine output
- Discuss the issue with your diabetologist who will suggest needed evaluations as renal function tests, HBA1c report, Doppler of lower limb vessels to diagnose the cause and treat accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
