What Causes Oliguria After Removal Of An Ureteral Stent?

My husband had heart surgery ten days ago. He wore a coil until Friday and today is Sunday. When the urologist removed the coil she said his bladder did wake up an he was good to go. However, that was Friday and it is now Sunday morning and he still has not urinated. What is the possible danger of retaining the urine this number of day?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi
Thanks for asking.

Two possibilities are there.
First of all you said heart surgery. Please clarify whether it is bypass surgery, valvular surgery or transplant.? Oliguria occurs when heart is unable to purfuse blood to kidney. This can be a probable reason. For that you can consult heart surgeon.

Second - it may be due to crusting in urethra because of catheter, which can block urine outflow. So it is advisable to consult urologist in this scenario.

If urine output is not there for more than 2 days and there is pain or soreness / fulness in lower abdomen than you should consult urologist immediately.
