What Causes Outbreak Of Hives Along With Tightness In Throat?

I developed hives yesterday. Today they were worse and I went to the Dr. Got a steroid shot and a shot of Benedryl. Also took a Zyrtec and applied mometasone furoate cream. Rash is still worse and my lips and eyelids are swollen. Now I get a tightness in my throat like its getting clogged. Should I go to ER

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain hives along with tightness in throat and swollen lips and eyelids seems to be most probably due to allergic reaction and can be due to causes like allergy to any food or medication, bug bites, skin cosmetics, detergents, poison ivy etc..
As the symptoms did not resolve even after taking a steroid shot as well as taking anti allergics and steroid ointment there is a possibility that you are being continuously exposed to allergen and there is increase in severity of allergic reaction..
I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like allergic tests like Patch test, RAST test, food challenge test etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

The tests will help in ruling out the exact cause of the allergen and once you know the cause of the allergic reaction you can avoid exposure to it to prevent allergy attack..

The allergist can instil intravenous fluids along with anti allergics and steroids and once the symptoms improve, oral anti allergics as well as steroid can be given for relief..

As of now you can take anti-allergics like Levocetrizine, Allegra to control the itching and swelling..
Do cool compresses..
Application of calamine lotion can help in soothing the skin..

You can also be instilled an Immunotherapy that will help in reducing the severity and frequency of allergic attack..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards..
