What Causes Outbreak Of Hives On Abdomen Of A Child?

While taking my 4 year old for a walk in a wooded area she was picking up rocks. She said ouch and rubbed her belly. There was a rolled up caterpillar and she said it bit me. I didn t think much of it but when we got home she cont to scratch. She had a mild rash to her abdomen. Tried cortisone cream which she said helped a little. The area has gotten progressively worse today and is now obvious hives. Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is possible that the caterpillar caused an allergic reaction in your child, which resulted in hives on her abdomen. Hives, also known as urticaria, are a common skin reaction that can occur due to an allergic response to a trigger such as an insect bite, sting, or contact with an irritant. In this case, it is possible that the caterpillar's venom or hair caused an allergic reaction in your child, leading to the hives.

If the hives persist or worsen, it is recommended that you take your child to a doctor for a proper diagnosis and treatment. The doctor may prescribe antihistamines to alleviate the symptoms and/or recommend avoidance of contact with caterpillars or other potential allergens in the future. It is important to monitor your child for any signs of a more severe allergic reaction, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or a rapid heartbeat, which require immediate medical attention.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
