Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Overactive Salivary Glands During Nights?
This happens to me every time I start getting a cold. When I start getting sick, I start getting a sore throat (which I know is a normal symptom), but along with it comes an excessive amount of saliva production. It keeps me up at night because every 1-2 hours I wake up with a drenched pillow and the need to run to the sink to spit. It s even worse when I have to go to school and it pools up in my mouth during class- so I have to subtly spit into a napkin. I try swallowing the saliva but it nauseates me and makes me want to throw up. This has got to be the worst symptom of the cold, at least for me, since no one else I ve talked to seems to have this problem. Is something wrong with me? Why do I always produce so much saliva when I get a sore throat? Thanks in advance!

Hi it's not just you don't worry. When you have a sore throat swallowing becomes painful so saliva that we would normally swallow very unconsciously gets pent up in the mouth. Swallowing so much saliva at once is going to nauseate anyone. What you can do is use some lozenges and do salt water gargling to keep your throat pain free so you can swallow the saliva more comfortably. I hope this helps. Take care :)
