What Causes Pain Above Adam S Apple While Swallowing And Yawning?
Hello I am experiencing a sudden onset of moderate pain when I swallow, or yawn. The pain is just above my adam s apple. It is somewhat painful/achey feeling without swallowing or touching. The pain is a sharp pain at first with an achey/sore feeling following immediately afterward whenever I swallow, yawn, or cough
Sudden onset of pain while swallowing or during yawning or coughing just above adams apple could be related to upper respiratory tract or muscular pain over throat.
But majority of cases throat pain are due to viral infection (EB virus, adenovirus) but in some cases it might be related to bacterial infection (streptococcal pharyngitis).
We differentiate the cause through routine blood counts with throat examination, pharyngoscopy to rule out non infective causes.
Therefore it is advisable to see the doctor,Preferably ENT specialist for complete medical history including history of sensitivity to antibiotics and thoroughly clinical examination.
You might require antibiotics such as levofloxacin 500 mg (to prevent super infection if cause is viral) with analgesics, anti-inflammatories,antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer combination (montelukast with levocetrizine) and steam inhalation 2 to 3 times a day.
You can also have warm salt water gargles which helps to get relief from throat soreness and irritation.
