What Causes Pain Across The Upper Abdomen And Nausea?

My daughter is 26 and began having upper abdominal pain just under her sternum and radiating from side to side. The pain is about a 7 or 8 on a scale to 10. She has nausea and vomiting with diarrhea. She gets a little relief after throwing up but then the pain returns. Is this possibly a virus or should she go to the ER? This has been going on for approx. 9-10 hrs.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.

Severe pain in upper abdomen just under sternum spreading to side to side along with diarrhea and severe nausea, vomiting is suggestive of Gastroenteritis.
Whether this is bacterial or viral can be understood by the tests of stool and blood along with clinical presentation, history of eating outside or so and whether this is going on in the community.
Whatever the cause the basic management remains same as follows:
Injections for nausea and vomiting, a PPI like Pantoprazle.
Followed by oral Domperidone and antacids if nausea and vomiting is controlled.
If there is any evidence of bacterial infection an added appropriate antibiotic active against intestinal infection that is stomach friendly can be added along with Metronidazole.
Probiotics an every case.
Plenty of oral fluids and electrolyte solution t counter dehydration and electrolyte imbalance.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
