What Causes Pain After Discontinuing Hydrocodone-Acetaminophen Post Arthroscopic Knee Surgery?

My husband recently had arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a meniscus and fuse a stress fracture. He was taking hydrocodon acetaminophen 5.325 for pain. He was taking 2 pills every 4 hrs for three days and then one every six hours for two days. He stopped and has experienced leg pain. Is this a normal reaction?
