What Causes Pain After Eating Peanut Butter?

Peanut butter. I have no known allergies OR digestive issues. Can eat peanut butter in other forms but when I eat it out of the jar it feels like sludge going through my system. The pain is comparable to a galstone. It lasts for several hours. What causes this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are experiencing pain after eating peanut butter. You do not have any known allergens or digestive issues with peanut butter. You may not have allergy to ingesting peanut butter but peanut butter intolerance can arise when we eat the same foods over and over again for weeks and months.

You are suggested to give it a break and try some other products also for a change. Peanut butter intolerance can cause acid reflux/acidity or heartburn, thus causing pain and discomfort. You can take antacids or PPI's, one SOS when needed to get rid of it. It can also cause fatigue, skin rashes, acne, weight gain if it is taken everyday. Peanut butter should not be taken regularly.

Regular intake may trigger chronic immune system disease that can cause inflammation in the esophageal tissue and make it difficult to swallow. Since you are having gall stone like pain you may want to consider getting blood work done. Get clinically examined by a GP, get all required tests and investigations done. Get treated at the earliest.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
