What Causes Pain And Bleeding In The Ears?

Thursday at 7:30am I went to urgent care with a severe left earache and sinus pressure. I was prescribed Flonase, azithromycn, and Prednisone, all to be taken once per day. I took all three at 11:45am. For the pain, I took two Aleve at 8:30am. At 4 pm, my ear pain became unbearable and I was prescribed norco (took at 7 pm), which reduces the pain from 10 to 5-7. In addition, I have been applying warm cloths every hour beginning at 5:45pm. Around 8:30 pm, I discovered a trace of blood coming from my left year. I checked my ear a few hours later, no signs of blood. At midnight, the pain escalated to a 10 with more than a trace of blood and again 2:30 am (Friday). The drainage from my ear doesn t contain puss or discoloration other than the bright red blood. I ve only felt the drainage after removing the warm cloth. Should I be concerned?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It is nice to know that you have been physically examined. Please continue to take the prescribed medications. It looks like your middle ear has got infected/ inflamed & swollen. It will take time to heal. Since you have blood oozing out from your left ear your eardrums are affected. You are taking the medications, your ear drums should get healed. Have patience & make sure you are hearing well. If you have problems with hearing you should get audiometry test done. Perforation in the eardrum do heal by themselves but at times surgery is required. Stay connected with the treating PCP & report immediately if you have problems so that you can be treated well in time. Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
