What Causes Pain And Discomfort In The Chest?

My heart hurts, but I have gone to my school doctor and they said it was anxiety. I dont believe it is because I am perfectly fine until sometimes (like once or twice a month) when I lay down or even when I am just sitting in class. Its not a sharp pain but some kind of dull/pressure type discomfort. I have no clue what to do and they still insist its nothing. It happens when I breath out and it hurts on the left-ish center of my heart. What should I do?

Hi,

The pain you explain is a typical muscular pain. Anxiety might cause chest muscles to go into spasm and cause muscular chest pain.
Heart problems would generally cause pain when you walk or exercise and not usually when you sit or lay down.
Patients with chest pain due to anxiety are worried that it might be their heart as it is happening in your case. Treating anxiety might help with the pain.

In your case because you get the pains only 1-2 times a month I would recommend that you do not take regular medications for anxiety but only Lorazepam 1 mg when you get those pains. You should not use it very often because it may cause dependence. You might try to be more involved in exercises, go more often for walks and do activities you enjoy, spend time with friends and family, eat healthy and avoid caffeine, alcohol, smoking or drugs.

If you notice the frequency of the pains is increasing you will need to see your doctor to examine you and also decide on further treatment.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
