What Causes Pain And Inflammation Behind The Knees?

My mother has diabetes and is on dialysis: She noticed redness and what looks like bruising on the back of her knee and is painful. After a MRI showing no clots, but an urinalysis showing an infection he diagnosed her with Superficial Phlebitis and gave her antibiotics. Now a week later her legs are burning with EXCRUTIATING pain and her hands will sometimes jerk. Her entire legs burn. What could it be? Thank you, Michelle Hossain

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to superficial phlebitis. This diagnosis is usually characterized by inflammation and pain in the area. I see that you are already taking the right medications.

I would recommend also taking anti inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen three times a day. You should also maintain the leg elevated to reduce the pain and inflammation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
