What Causes Pain And Itching In The Arms?

For the past several years Sometime 1 or 2 times a year I suffer itching and pain in one of my arms. Every doctor I have gone to diagnose it as an allergy reaction to something. I don t have any outward rashes or anything only redness or scratches where I have itched myself to death trying to stop the pain. It feels like crawling under my skin, moves to burning and severe pain in my shoulder, elbow or wrist joints. It always stays only in one arm, this time the right. The pain, itch and burn keeps me up all night. My doctor prescribed a steroid cream for the itching, sometime it helps. I also take benadril at bedtime so I can sleep and Zyrtec during the day. One doctor I saw a few years ago said my symptoms sound more like shingles and treated me for shingles. I personally feel she was more on the right track. Any suggestions? I m at my whits end, just putting on a long sleeve shirt can set off the cycle. Then nothing, it goes away and doesn t come Bach again for months. Right now I am suffering the cycle again.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It could be allergic eruptions or hives.
As a first line of management you can take antihistamines like Pheneramine for symptomatic relief. If symptoms persist you can consult a dermatologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
