3 weeks ago, My 91 year old mother started experiencing pain in her baby toe just prior to going to bed; by morning she reported a painful itching, with severe tenderness and redness. It got worse over the next few days. Her podiatrist put her on an antibiotic 10 days ago and recommended that she soak her foot 3 times a day in epson salt. He said it was a serious infection and that if it did not get better in a week she could risk losing her toe/toes. It s better, but then today the swelling and redness began to spread over her 3 toes (NOT big tow.) is it possible she has gout? and if so, what the recommendation for treatment and timeline?
