What Causes Pain And Numbness Below The Shoulders?
My husband is 81 years old and is in really good health overall. His left arm from a few inches below his shoulder all the way to his fingers go numb and he s in severe pain. During the day he normally does not have any pain. It s mostly at night when he lays down in bed. If he does not fall asleep right away, his left arm goes numb and he s in severe pain. Sometimes he does go to sleep and wakes up in severe pain. Sometimes he can sit on the side of the bed and after a while the pain subsides. He is taking 600-800 mg ibuprofen as needed, which helps sometimes. Other times it takes pain pills to get relief. His family doctor has no idea why this is happening. He had an MRI of his neck, which showed two bulging disks due to damage done by arthritis. He met with a neouologist that read the MRI. He said he could not find anything that would cause the numbness and pain. The only recent injury we can think of is he ran into a door jam with his left shoulder so hard that it swung him around so hard that his forehead hit the door jam. It was dark and he misjudged where the doorway was located. Could this have caused the problem? What do you suggest we do? Only other mess he takes is a high blood pressure pill. And he has high iron levels, which requires a phlebotomy occasionally. Would appreciate any advice you could give him.
This is quite a typical history of treatment of his nerve that supplies the arm. This causes pain and numbness. The nerve can be trapped in the spine (by the bulging disc). or in the shoulder (maybe because of trauma).
I would personally like to do a detailed examination of his hand and shoulder and more importantly, nerve conduction study that we'll tell us about his nerve and if trapped anywhere.
We can then manage it accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
