What Causes Pain And Numbness In Hands And Fingers?

My 61 yo husband experiences severe pain in hands after a day working in hard. Appears to be neurological as opposed to muscular. Hands go to sleep and ache painfully - like a headache in the hands, fingers, thumb. Motrin doesn t appear to help much.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It seems that the symptoms of your husband are related to the work that he have done. Repetitive activities, in general, cause swelling from irritated tendons or fluid in the carpal tunnel. The swelling compresses nerves, leading to pain and tingling in the fingers. I recommend to use an anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen three times a day. If the symptoms continue, I suggest to see a neurologist for further evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
