Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello. for about six or more months I have been experience a numb tongue. There were times when it was quit painful. i also had a metalic taste in my mouth. At first I thought it was the sensodyne toothpaste so i stopped using it. it went away for a while then came back. So i thought maybe I had an iron deficiency. I began taking iron pills and again it went away. Now today the numbness is returning. I say numb, but its more like between numb and painful. the only time the feeling goes away is when i eat. what could this be?
Pain sensation on tongue and can also be associated with numbing sensation occur due to a number of causes like nutritional deficiency of iron and vitamin B12, dry mouth or xerostomia, stress, acid reflux, side effects of medicines, etc. I would suggest you to consult an oral physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and investigations like blood tests can be advised.
Treatment of underlying cause will resolve the symptoms. As of now to get relieved you can start gargling with a numbing mouthwash containing Lignocaine. Take anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen. Avoid spicy foods and take a soft bland diet. Suck ice pops.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Honey Arora
