What Causes Pain And Popping Sensation In A Lipoma On The Back After Coughing?

I have had a fairly large lipoma on my lower back for 25 yrs or so now. I was recently in an auto accident and injured that side of body. Today I coughed and felt a searing pain and sort of a pop. Is it possible I broke the lipoma open? Should I be concerned. I am still having a great deal of pain

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The lipoma has a soft capsule and it is difficult to be broken since it is elastic. Even if it was broken thus is not something to worry about because it is surrounded by skin.

The most concerning think is the bones in your back. You should do a x-ray of spine to check for broken bones which may have caused the breaking noise.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
