What Causes Pain And Redness In The Big Toe Joint?

I began having pain in my big toe. I have bunion so I thought that was the problem. The big toe joint began to become red, warm to the touch and very painful. Swelling started and spread to my entire foot. Pain was off the chart. I went to doctor and gout was assumed to be the culprit, but my uric acid level revealed that it was only slightly elevated. My sister, brother and my father suffer from gout. I was given Indocin and the symptoms immediately responded, but after 5 days I am still having problems. Not sure I believe the gout diagnosis. Could the symptoms be something else?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You should take an X-ray, ultrasound, CT or MRI to examine soft tissue and bone. The doctor might also remove fluid from the affected joint and examine it under a microscope for uric acid crystals.

Finding uric acid crystals in the joint fluid is the surest way to make a gout diagnosis. Elevated levels of uric acid may have other reasons like a diet rich in proteins.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Blerina Pasho, General & Family Physician
