What Causes Pain And Redness In The Eyes?

my 22 year old son got something in his eye at around 11am today, most likely dirt, dust, or debris from lawn cutting, His eye is red, has foreign body sensation, hurts when both eyes are open, but feels better when both eyes are closed. He flushed/rinsed the eye earlier at work, and I gave him Systane eye drops which he has used twice in the past 4 hours to lubricate the eye. I think he is ok to rest the eye and will probably feel better in the morning (since his eye doesn t hurt when both eyes are closed), is it appropriate to watch and wait it out? No trauma to the eye, there is no swelling, just some pain when it is open and tearing when the eye is open

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

If the pain persists after 24 hours, consult an ophthalmologist, eye drops what you have used above is temporarily good. It may be an allergic symptom due to the dust.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
