What Causes Pain And Spasms In The Lower Abdomen?

Hi, My 52 yr old girlfriend is having moderate (or maybe a little worse) pain associated with bilateral cramping/spasms in her ovarian region. She is having her period. The episode began during a rather strenuous dance class, subsided with rest, and then started up again with activity. Her health is good (marathon runner), and this has not happened before. Should I be concerned? Thank you

Hello,

The pain is very unlikely from fibroid; it will cause vague discomfort rather than pain(pain occur only with complicated fibroids-very rare).

Pain in the lower abdomen, if not in the premenstrual days, is most commonly caused by urinary tract infection.

But you are not having other features like nausea/dysuria/frequency.

This can be caused by disturbed bowel habit also. Anyhow, right now you need not worry.

Just take simple analgesics like acetaminophen 500 mg or ibuprofen 400mg thrice daily after food for 3 days(if not allergic).

If the pain comes down, stop the drug after 3-5 days. Otherwise, if it persists after 2 days or the other mentioned symptoms appears, kindly see your doctor for further evaluation.

Meanwhile, drink plenty of oral fluids and include enough fruits and veggies in the diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
