What Causes Pain And Stiffness In The Hand After An Injury?

Hello, I went to a hand specialist several weeks ago about pain in my hand. The pain has existed for approximately three months. In the meantime, I broke my index finger on the same hand. I believe coinciding with the pain, I had begun to take piano lessons. The pain exists on the back of the hand inbetween the index finger and middle finger . The pain is the worst when I spread out my fingers or try to push my hand back. There is a burning, stabbing pain that goes from my palm by the pad of the thumb up and over the back of my hand that I just described and continues down the back of my hand towards my wrist. My hands also feel week and very stiff. I am going to request an MRI, but I was just curious in the meantime to see if I could find out what the cause might be for the pain

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your symptoms seem to be related to carpal tunnel syndrome. I suggest to take more frequent breaks to rest your hands. Avoiding activities that worsen symptoms and applying cold packs to reduce swelling also may help. Other treatment options include wrist splinting and medications such as anti inflammatory medications.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
