What Causes Pain And Swelling Around The Incision Site On Ankle?

My name is Esther and 1.67m tall. I had gunshot injury on my led around the ankle over one month and surgery was carried out twice because the fragments was not removed properly. Right now, the incisoion wound seem to look healed from outside eventhough part of the incision wound has not closed up. I am feeling pain inside out in the incision area and round my toes too. I have not been able to walk with the legs but on my last appointment, the crutches were collected from me and I have been asked to exert pressure on it. Ever since then, it has been painful and I cant bear weight on the leg and it gets swollen even when I take few steps, it only goes down when I elevate. Currently, I have decided to apply heat and started taking ampliclox on my own because I have stopped antibiotics for 2 weeks now. Please advice me on what to do as I am anxious to start my normal activities and also want to get back to work...I can only do this if I can walk without pains and swelling anymore.

Hi,

Pain and swelling around the incision site on the ankle after surgery may be caused by several factors. In your case, it sounds like there may be some inflammation or infection present, which could be contributing to your symptoms.

It is important to see a healthcare provider for an evaluation if you are experiencing pain, swelling, or other symptoms after surgery. They can perform a physical exam and order any necessary tests to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

Applying heat to the affected area may help to reduce pain and inflammation, but it is important to avoid applying heat directly to the incision site. Instead, use a warm compress or take a warm bath to help relax the muscles and promote circulation.

Taking antibiotics without a prescription from a healthcare provider is not recommended, as it can lead to antibiotic resistance and other complications. Instead, talk to your healthcare provider about any concerns you have regarding your medication regimen.

Your healthcare provider may recommend additional treatments such as physical therapy, pain management, or surgery to help address your symptoms and promote healing. They can also guide when it may be safe to resume normal activities and return to work.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

It sounds like you may have an infection in the incision site or surrounding tissues, which can cause pain and swelling. It is important to see your doctor as soon as possible to have this evaluated and treated appropriately. Your doctor may need to take a culture of the wound and prescribe antibiotics to clear the infection.

It is not advisable to take antibiotics on your own without medical supervision. Additionally, continuing to bear weight on the affected leg may worsen the injury and delay your recovery. Follow your doctor's instructions for resting, elevating your leg, and applying ice or heat as appropriate.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
