Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my husband who is 46 yrs old & in good health & walks about 6-8 miles a day is experiencing foot & ankle swelling & pain. There has been no injury to kick start this situation. He went to an orthopedic specialist & they took an xray & also a sonogram to rule out blood clots & broken bones. We've not heard back from the ortho regarding the sonogram but were told if there was a clot he would not be allowed to leave. All of that was late Friday afternoon. The pain & swelling continues & we are sticking with ice bathes & ibuprophen. What could it be?!
Hi, Thanks for contacting HCM. At this time, it would be probably safe to assume that you have heard the sonogram results by now. If there is no fracture and no blood clot issues, usually what I see in patients is that there is either some sort of circulation issue (such as a vein insufficiency) or probably less likely, an inflammatory issue (such as gout-usually associated with redness). We test the veins to see if the valves in them are not working as well as they should and determine further treatment from there. I hope this answers your question. If you have any further questions, I am here to help. Thanks.
