Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a swollen jaw and it is VERY painful and I'm wondering if I should go to the ER. I can't eat much except yogurt & mash potatoes. Any suggestions of what I should do, I have heard that it can be dangerous if there is an infection that it can also go into your brain.
As per your complain pain and swelling over the jaw with difficulty in eating can be due to causes like tooth infection causing Dental Abscess formation.. It can also be due to wisdom tooth related infection and inflammation of gum flap.. Cellulitis can be another cause.. It can be related to infection in major salivary glands.. But a confirmation can be done only after a proper clinical examination and investigations like x ray and blood tests (if not a Dental problem) to confirm the cause.. As of now take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen along with serratiopeptidases.. Do cool compresses over the jaw..
Infection that gets severe and untreated can reach the brain but it will depend upon the type of infection and not every infection can reach the brain..
Hope this helps..
Regards..
