What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Ankles?

Good evening, my partner has damaged h9s ankle playing football. This was 11 days ago. His ankle is swollen and very painful, it s been treated using RICE, however the swelling doesn t seem to be shifting and we have noticed an odd indentation above his ankle. It almost looks like a chunk has gone missing from under the skin at that part and the pain radiates up the back of his lower leg. Any ideas as to what this could be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your symptoms seem to be related to fluid retention in the ankles. One of the common causes of this situation is inflammation and injury.

I suggest you maintain the leg elevated and use cool compresses to relieve the swelling.

I also suggest you use anti-inflammatory medications such as Ibuprofen.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi,
