Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Yes, my dad is 89 years old in very good health and suddenly his hand started to hurt swell and become very warm. He can t use it anymore. I know it could be many things but his sister and just last summer his brother died of ALS in just 4 months beginning to end at age 87. His hand did the same thing. We are seeing a neurologist soon but I know my uncle was miss diagnosed over and over. I know he should see a ALS neurologist but how do we find one the specializes in ALS.
Considering the history you provided and your father's age, I would like to suggest some tests: 1. MRI Head 2. Nerve Conduction Study 3. X-Ray of the hand (affected one) 4. Complete Blood Count 5. Tests for RF (Rheumatoid Factor) 6. lumbar puncture for glutamate level
In the meantime, I would like to start this medication: Riluzole
Please give him foods rich in foods which are rich in Vitamin C, E, B and B6. He can also take Multivitamin supplement
Please inform if any other symptoms appear. You can also post another question with the test results so that a doctor here can follow you up.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Dipan Samanta, General & Family Physician
