What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Knee When Diagnosed With Bursitis?

My husband went to the doctor due to knee pain and swelling. The doctor diagnosed it as bursitis. He has been keeping it elevated, wearing a brace and icing it and it s not getting much better and now since Wednesday his lower leg through his foot have been quite swollen. Would this be normal for bursitis of the knee?
