What Causes Pain And Swelling In The Leg After An Injury?

I fell on May 18th and hurt my leg/hip and a hematoma about the size of a softball resulted. I went to the ER and was x-rayed and CT scanned and no break was found. I have been using ice-packs and some of the swelling has gone down but it is still extremely sore. I am very bruised, but that is fading. Should I follow up again with the attending ER doctor or is it just one of those things that takes time to heal. I am 83 yrs and my daughter keeps telling me that it takes longer due to my age, is this true ?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Very certainly, due to your age the injuries take a little longer to heal. However, you mention that the injury was produced in May, this is where my thinking changes.

Having almost 4 months since your fall, we should take into account other things, such as, if you were indicated some treatment for inflammation (in the emergency and later in your home) apart from the ice that you put on. If you have not noticed any type of pain relief since that time, I recommend that you attend a consultation with a traumatologist for a re-evaluation.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
