Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had an EGD and Colonoscopy 5 days ago. I woke up to severe pain and swelling to my lower lip on the right side. Since this time, the pain has officially mutated to numbness from lip to chin, with the exception of feeling pain. I understand that the mouth guard probably caught my teeth and lip causing injury, however, how long should this continue before I should start getting anxious?
There was slight injury to the soft tissues during the procedure as well as possible minor injury to nerves in the area.
Since none of the nerves were likely severed, complete recovery is expected, though in some people this can take 2 to 3 weeks to occur. If it continues beyond this time or it worsens, you should see your doctor for assessment. There are medications that are used to help in nerve-related pain.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Michelle Gibson James
