What Causes Pain And Swelling In Thumb After A Hand Injury?

I fell skiing a couple of months ago and fell on my right hand. I have had severe pain on the outside (pinky side) of my right wrist since. Nothing showing on x-ray or CT scan...have MRI booked for Jan 2016!!! Also, since that fall, my schaphoid bone has protruded more than usual from my wrist. Going to see a hand/wrist physiotherapist in a couple of weeks to see if they can figure it out. Dr and orthopeadic surgeon say they see nothing. I have had swelling at the base of my thumb and into my arm that has never gone down. All of that being said....I feel down some stairs today and flew backwards and most of my weight went on to this same wrist. I now how have extreme pain at the base of my thumb and it has swollen up quite a bit. Thoughts on any of this???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear sir, for your previous injury I can say that it was soft tissue injury which might involved tendons and ligaments which is difficult to diagnose even on CT or MRI,coming to treatment part, rest and physiotherapy is only mode of treatment and may take weeks to months for full recovery.
Now for your fresh injury if there is extreme pain and large swelling, then you should again take a radiograph to rule out the fracture, you can take medicine like cipzox tablet, which is a combination of painkiller and muscle relaxant.Further you should apply a creepe bandage in normal position and can have ice fomentation on affected part for three times a day,you should wear bandage for whole day and remove it before going to bed.Give full rest to your hand and do not ignore even of there is no fracture.
Hope it was useful for you,Get well soon.
