Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I think I might have a meniscus tear in my knee. I have pain and swelling in the front and inside of my knee and it makes a popping sound off and on, mostly when I flex it or twist it. Also it gave out on me when I was walking down the stairs in my house today. My question is, will it get worse if I don t have have medical treatment for a few months? It is fairly painful but not a good time for me to be off work.
Knee joint is the largest joint in the body between the thigh and leg bones mainly between the femur and tibia. The joint is strengthened by the muscles, ligaments and cartilages to bear the weight of the body. There is controlled forward and backward movements allowed in the knee joint.
Menisci are two cartilage structures present between the femur and tibia for smooth functioning of the knee joint. These are C-shaped structures attached to tibia. These cartilage may damage while during stressful movements such as twisting of knee or during sudden flexion and stopping.
Management of the injury depends on the level of injury, age and cartilage involved. Initial management involves rest and physical muscle strengthening exercises. If there is no improvement with conservative managements, surgery is the next step of management. MRI scan, knee arthroscopy are the investigations available to confirm the pathology.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
