What Causes Pain And Tendernedss In The Fingers?

My daughter is 16 and bites her cuticles. she now has moderate pain in two of her fingers including her thumb with a pain level of 5-7. She says that her fingers are very tender, not warm to the touch, but when she touches them it hurts extremely bad. Her tip of her thumb is a little bluish. when she adds ice to them, she says they feel better. Could this be a bacterial infection?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

First of all it's sad to know what your daughter had been going through lately.

Based on the history you have shared, she needs to be evaluated by her primary care physician as these symptoms can be due to autoimmune disorders which may present with such discolouration of fingers like in systemic vasculitis or related Raynaud's phenomenon.

Local fungal infection is another possibility. Baseline autoimmune work up and vasculitis profile is a must.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
