What Causes Pain Around A Surgical Incision Along With Hiccups?

I have a friend that just had bypass surgery and has a problem with uncontrollable hiccups. This has been going on now for 5 days and he is miserable as it is painful with the incision. Is this normal to have hiccups this long after the procedure? Could this be a sign of a pulmonary embolism?
