What Causes Pain Around The Breastbone While Suffering From Cough?

I ve been sick with a bacterial infection. Coughing, headache, some drainage, some aches. Three days ago I was prescribed and started taking Amox-clav 875mg. All day today I have had severe pain in my esophageal area, right around the breastbone. What could be causing this?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. You might be having gastritis due to stress of repeated coughing and also due to medications. Some of the tips I would like to suggest you are:

1. Do not eat spicy food
2. Take medications without fail as prescribed by your doctor. In case there is severe pain you can take antacid syrup like gelusil 5ml thrice a day
3. Take little food at frequent intervals. Breakfast around 8am, small snack at 11am, lunch at 1pm, small snack at 4pm and dinner at 8pm
4. Drink plenty of water, hot water
5. Do not take much of stress. Stress aggravates gastritis
6. Do regular exercise. Atleast half an hour per day
7. Learn meditation techniques
8. Cut down on intoxicants like smoking and alcohol

Hope I have answered your question. Feel free to contact me if you have any more questions. I ll be glad to help you.

All the best.

With warm regards,
Dr. Sanjay Kini
