What Causes Pain Around The Right Elbow?

My right arm hurts at the elbow. For a couple of months I thought it was arthritis. My doctor asked if I wanted an xray, I said no because it was on the elbow & felt like arthritis. Now the pain is more in the inside of the elbow & has been painful at times all day today.

Hello,

Pain in right elbow can be due to many causes. It would have been helpful if you mentioned whether the pain is on outer aspect or inner aspect of the elbow joint, whether it increases on certain movements, whether associated with any swelling or stiffness in the elbow movements. I hope there is no other joint involvement other than the elbow joint.

As you have mentioned that it is the right elbow which is paining, the most common cause can be due to an inflammation at the point of insertion of the extensor tendons of the hand. It is known as lateral epicondylitis (also known as tennis elbow). It arises due to constant use of the elbow joint in many of our normal daily activities like washing clothes. In that case the pain will be in the lateral (outer) condyle of our elbow. There will be pain on deep pressure in that area.

Pain can occur in inner condyle if it is involved in daily actions like swinging motions as in carpenters, golfers. In both the cases, rest is required in the involved joint and you have to use brace just below the joint as a support measure. Cold compress can also be used. If pain is severe analgesics can be used.

Usually pain resolves on taking proper rest and cold compress. It is also better if you could take an x-ray of the joint to rule out other joint problems like joint effusion, cyst or any mass lesions from the bone. Kindly get an erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) done to assess whether there is any associated arthritis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Meera Rajeev
