What Causes Pain Around The Upper Chest?

I went to an urgent center this weekend due to pain all around my upper chest from back to front to shoulders, not to arms. The doctor stated that it was not the heart but pericarditis that is the lining of the heart? What would cause that? I am now suppose to follow up with a cardiologist?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Pericarditis is inflammation of the pericardium. It is fibrous sac around heart. Treatment will depend on cause. Following are causes: Idiopathic, viral infection, bacterial infections such as tuberculosis, uremic pericarditis, following a heart attack, cancer, autoimmune disorders, and chest trauma.

Clinical examination, chest X ray, USG scan, will help in diagnosis. Drugs like ibuprofen, colchicine and steroid will help you. Other treatment will depend on specific cause. Undergo follow up visit after 7-10 days to know the progress if disease.

Hope this may help you. Contact further if follow up needed.

Best regards,
Dr. Sagar
