What Causes Pain At The Base Of The Head During Cough?
Hi, for several years I have had a chronic cough which was just diagnosed last year as asthma. During that time, I would occasionally experience a pain in my head bilaterally and also at the base of my head that would last approx. 10 seconds. Now, almost every time I have a coughing attack I experience this pain, but now it is so intense and painful that I feel like I am going to pass out and the base of head/neck gets so stiff that afterwards it somewhat painful to move my head hardly move my head. Also, my sense of smell has diminished drastically. Do you think I have that much pressure building up in my head from coughing? It scares me because I think I am going to have an aneurysm.
Do MRI of head and neck to rule out any severity. There are allergy tests now a days which can tell cause of asthma. Wear a mask and avoid pollution, dust etc. Do an ENT examination, it will tell cause of loss of smell as it can be sinuses or other causes.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Sunny Madar, General & Family Physician
