What Causes Pain Behind Eye While Coughing?

Started with slight pain behind right eye when coughing three days ago then I woke up on the middle of the night with a severe headache with symptoms of nausea. I have had a 99-100 degree fever for a day and used Tylenol to get rid of it but the headache is still there and hurts behind my eyes when rolling them or across the tops of my head and eyes when bending over sitting or lying down.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Fever, headache, nausea, and pain beneath the eyes are not due to any disorder of an eye. In fact, the symptoms are suggestive of influenza. The pain beneath the right eye may be due to the involvement of ethmoid sinuses. Ethmoid sinuses are a group of sinuses present beneath the sockets of eyes bilaterally.

Treatment with Tylenol will help. In addition, an anti-histaminic like levocetirizine or loratadine should also be added.
Rest is required for at least 5 days.
Hydration and nutrition should be maintained.
If the symptoms do not get relieved even after taking treatment for 5 days, then you need to consult your primary health care provider.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri
