What Causes Pain Behind The Head And Neck?

I have pain in the back of my head and neck with painful and swollen glands on the right side of my neck and jaw. has been chronic for a long time. cannot lay on my back because causes alot of pain in head and neck. Had an xray at one time but only showed slight arthritis. Getting worse over time. OTC meds offer very minimal relief. What else can be done or what should we look for?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The pains you describe may be caused by your swollen lymph nodes. Possible causes of swollen lymph nodes may include:
• Neck infections
• Viral/bacterial infections
• Lymph node TB
• Immune system disorders
• Lymphomas, and others

Given the chronic nature of your swollen glands, I will advise you see the Doctor for a biopsy. Analysis of the lymph node may help reveal the exact cause of your symptoms. Neck osteoarthritis may cause pain but will rarely cause swollen nodes.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mbuomboh Veranso
