What Causes Pain Below The Ear?

I have noticed through the evening that my jaw on the right side below my ear hurts when I am drinking. My ear feels it may be plugged. I can see and feel a good size lump that looks swollen. Do I need to seek treatment right away or can I wait until morning

Hi,

There are a few causes of the pain in your jaw. The most likely one is blockage of eustachian tube. This is the tube that connects the ear with the throat and helps ventilate the ear space and when it is blocked it may cause pain in the area while eating (due to pressure building there while eating) and also feeling of plugged ears.

This is generally caused by a viral infection and takes a couple of weeks to go away. In his case you don't need to see a doctor, it generally fades on its own. A more rare case is stone of the salivary duct.

This would cause blockage of the glands that produce the saliva and causes pain that is worse when eating and sometimes you can feel a tender lump right under the jaw between the chin and the jaw angle. This does not need treatment most of the time and you need to see a doctor only if it is getting worse.

I would recommend you to:
- take paracetamol and ibuprofen to help with the pain
- drink plenty and try to rest well
- if no improvement in a week or any worsening you will need to see your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Zotaj Antoneta
