What Causes Pain Below The Rib Cage On The Right Side After Coughing?

I have a cold- coughed and had extreme pain on Right side of abdomen just below rib cage, now if I clear my throat or cough I get pain to my far right side in same area, if I push in in that area I am sensitive slightly. Did I tear a muscle or something? The extreme pain only lasted a minute or 2. now I only feel discomfort when I cough.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concern.

Coughing is causing pressure on the muscles of the rib cage. Sometimes, they get hurt without being torn for the same.

If cough persists, it doesn't let time to chest muscles to recover.
This explains why you feel the pain in your right side which is also sensitive to the touch.

Once cough will stop, then no pressure will be put on the muscles. Consequently, they will have more time to recover.

However, it will take a few days to be pain free.

Can take OTC painkillers like ibuprofen or mephenamic acid to reduce the pain. Apply analgesic cream to the sensitive area.

Hope this helps.
