What Causes Pain Between The Breasts?

My husband is having pain in the middle between his breast bones. We went to emergency over the weekend and they checked his heart and lungs. They ran blood work for cardiac enzymes. His total cholesterol level was 142. they took a stress test, he passed that also. they do not believe it is his heart. but it seems that the pain comes and goes. this time it is lasting over 2 hours. Can you tell us what it could be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Is it a burning pain which radiates to his stomach region and back? Just take a look at his eating habits. See if the pain is increasing with intake of food or lying down. If so it could be due to gastritis. Dietary modification, exercise and drinking more fluids will relieve most of it. If it's not better, you can take a short course of proton pump inhibitors half an hour before food once daily after consulting a physician. There is nothing to worry.
Thank you.
