What Causes Pain During Menstruation While On Birth Control Pills?

I have had an unusually long period that began with very black blood and was much more painful than usual. I could not tell at first if the pain was in my stomach or my female areas. I do have some swelling in my vulva, I believe. I am 44 years old and on birth control pills but have been through quite a bit of stress recently. I also had unprotected sex recently with a new partner and am afraid I may have an STI. I do have an appointment with my OB/GYN tomorrow. Does this sound like an STI?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

It is quite common with birth control pills and it is due to hormonal actions of pills.

As first-line management, you can take drugs like mefenamic acid for pain relief.

If symptoms persist better to consult a gynecologist and get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
