What Causes Pain In Chest While Breathing?

My 19 year old son is experiencing pain every time he takes a breath. The pain is on his left side about midway up. He was sitting at a desk when he first felt the pain. He has not engaged in physical activity in several days and did not pull anything prior to feeling the pain. He is very healthy. Should we go to the emergency room?

Hi,

Since the pain is only while taking breath, it is unlikely a cardiac cause. Also, considering his age it may not be an emergency. It could be still a muscular pain which can be treated by analgesics. I would suggest:
1. Chest X-ray, ECG - to check for heart, chest and lung related problems
2. Check vitamin d levels - low vitamin d causes like muscular pains
3. Proper posture while sitting

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
