What Causes Pain In Collarbone After Eating Ice Cream?

Hi Doctors, I have three questions please.... 1. Why is it that when i eat really cold ice cream or drink a slushy that either collar bone becomes painful. I never from what i can remember have actually gotten a brain freeze but have always gotten what i call a shoulder freeze :D its annoying and painful whilst it lasts. 2. I always experience a paid that goes from the left of my sternum to under my left breast to under my left nipple. At times the pain feels like a shallow pain but most times it feels like its a deep pain and often find if i lay on my left side or try to reposition my body. I find that i need to lay on my right side for any comfort. 3. Under both my breasts but more on my left side under my breasts (not on the actual breast but under where the bra line would sit) i have cyst-like bumps which as i get older as starting to feel bigger, are more painful, and am finding it hard to lay on my front side as it feels like im laying on something hard, blunt, and painful. Some times after sitting at a desktop computer becomes painful and is tender when touching the area. I hope you could help thank you Noeline

Hello,

Your symptoms may be indicative of developing osteoarthritis or compression of the trigeminal nerve. Facial nerve may dilate due to eating ice-cream that is cold and cause nerve compression and hence pain at collar bone. Avoid eating food or taking drinks that are too cold. Sometimes, acid reflux or formation of too much gas can also cause pain under the sternum radiating to the collar bone.

For relief, take antacids or PPIs, avoid constipation, Take adequate amount of water and fluids. Take fiber rich food. Avoid taking oily, spicy food, packaged food, processed food, etc. Since the pain is specifically on the left side, you are advised to get clinically examined by a GP, get cardiac function tests, lipid profile, EKG, echocardiography, stress tests, etc., done to detect any developing CAD, coronary artery disease.

You should get the cyst examined. Since it is becoming painful and hard, a biopsy will have to be done along with other tests. The treating doctor will either give conservative treatment or recommend removal by surgery, whatever is the best for you. Do not neglect yourself, get treated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
