What Causes Pain In Ear When I Am Outside?

Whenever I am outside and the wind is blowing, I have very bad ear pain. Therefore, I cannot go on walks with my family many nights as we live in a fairly windy community. What causes this pain? Is there anything that I can do to prevent it? Today it was so bad that getting back to our house was difficult as the pain was the worst I have ever experienced.

Hello dear,

There is a connecting tract (known as Eustachian tube) between the nasopharynx & middle ear which helps in equalization of pressure between them.
An obstruction to this Eustachian tube, secondary to an upper respiratory tract infection, sinusitis, cold & congestion, can lead to ear pain by causing un-equalisation of pressure between the nasopharynx & middle ear.

Management includes:
1. Antihistamine preparations like Allegra.
2. Decongestant nasal drops.
3. Antibiotics based on culture & sensitivity reports.
4. Warm salt water gargle.
5. Steam inhalation.
6. Maintenance of adequate hydration & nutrition status of the body.
7. Protection from cold, dust & other allergens.

If symptoms still persist, kindly consult an ENT Specialist for complete clinical examination.
