What Causes Pain In Hips And Bilateral Lower Extremities?

I have been having pain in my hips and bilateral lower extremities for the past 17-18 hours. The pain is alleviated by walking slowly, not by laying down. In the past 18 hours I ve taken two 800mg Ibuprophens, one Percocet (17 hours ago). I have no swelling, redness in either legs or hips. Originally I had thought it was an allergic reaction so I did take 2 Benadryl tablets. These did not seem to help, then I went to the NSAIDS and then to Percocet. No N,V,D in the past 15 hours. I did walk 3 miles yesterday, but this is typical for me 2-4X week. No routine meds other than Rebif for my MS - No Coumadin, no aspirin. I m wondering if I may have a DVT or threw a clot somewhere but don t know about those typical symptoms other than pain in the extremities.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The pain both hips and lower extremities indicate various possible issues as:
- Muscle spasm involving para-vertebral region
- Ligamentum flavum inflammation or swelling
- Cord compression at L5 or S1 level

Possibility of clot or DVT is not likely in my experience. However, kindly visit your doctor for primary evaluation of lower limb reflexes, pulses and sensory, motor functioning to find out the cause and guide in accordance to that.

Till that time

- Apply heating pad over lower back
- Do not pursue excess or sudden bending
- NSAID 3 times a day after meals with antacid preferably
- Local application of spray or ointment with diclofenac or Capsaicin

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
