What Causes Pain In Legs, Tiredness And Anemia?

Hi I am enquiring on behalf of my step dad, he is 63 years old, was a heavy smoker but stopped completely about 5 years ago, drinks about 2 pints every day!! he started to feel unwell, serverly tired, lethargic and achy with cramps in his legs and went to the doctors who said he was severly anemic and had a blood transfusion about 2 weeks ago, now he has gone back to square one and feeling very tired, achey and has started to shake, he is going back to the doctors tomorrow but just wondered if you could throw any light into what could be wrong with him? Many thanks.
